The Cypher - Post-Manifesto Rap-Up Edition
For featured acts for the evening, we're putting on two veteran emcees (and long-time Cypher supporters), in addition to a young emcee who's been showing and proving much over the past year:
NewBreedMC
It's not very often that a rapper can come along and blend raw underground rap skills with commercial appeal that transcends cultural and social barriers, but NewBreedMC is definitely one of those MCs. Cut in the mold of a Mos Def or Black Thought and holding true to the core essence of Hip Hop that started out in the Bronx, NewBreedMC can spit a rhyme to have the back packers bopping their heads and at the same time he is well enough in tuned to social issues and political agendas that his words could start a small revolution.

Bad Newz
28-year-old emcee Bad Newz has come a long way since writing his first rhyme as a fourth-grader. The Torontonian’s easy flow and cocky lyrical style has earned him the respect of his peers and fans alike, once impressing 'The Teacher' himself, KRS-ONE, with a verse at a 2009 Ryerson University speaking engagement in Toronto. "My man, that was DOPE,” KRS told Newz in front of the packed house. “You... you are DOPE!" That small victory fueled Newz’ fire and he has worked hard to build towards a career as a successful recording artist. He’s currently piecing together his first solo mixtape “Dirty English,” which will surely put him squarely on the hip-hop map.

Drig
Drig is an emcee out of Markham, ON. Immersing himself in the local Toronto hip hop scene since 2011, he hopes to positively represent Canadian hip-hop and continually strives to define his signature sound through a wide variety of projects. He is currently working on an upcoming electronic and downtempo inspired mixtape, entitled “Flintstones Chewable Morphine,” since releasing "The Duffel Bag Pre-Tape" in September 2011.

THE CYPHER Presents...the "TO for Toronto Cypher" feat. SepTo and Brotha J
On the heels of his 3rd and latest mixtape, "T.O. For Toronto,"
SepTo joins forces with The Cypher to showcase some new music.
Mixed by turntablist, multiple award winner, and Toronto legend, DJ Grouch; T.O. For Toronto bridges the generation gap in Toronto’s (Canada’s) hip hop music landscape while paying homage to its history. SepTo updates some classic songs by the likes of Michee Mee, Kardinal Offishall, The Rascalz, Choclair, and more including the Ghetto Concept inspired lead single, EZ When Approachin’. The tape also features new music and verses from Dan-e-o, Wio K, Grimace Love, Shi Wisdom, Kardinal, and Septo’s own NevR crew, including Juno Award winner, Brotha J. Speaking about coming together with The Cypher, SepTo says “I’m very patriotic, so joining forces with The Cypher for some exclusiveperformances from my CD, was a no brainer. They respect the art and the architect and supported me at the genesis of my career ... I can’t wait to perform this music live!”

THE CYPHER - 3 Year Anniversary
3 Years Strong... From its humble beginnings in the summer of 2009 on the Queen Street sidewalk in front of KOPS Records, The Cypher has come a very long way. Starting out with the simple idea of giving hip hop emcees an outlet to get some mic time, The Cypher is now looked to by many artists as the place to sharpen and hone their talents and skills, network, have fun, express themselves, practice their rhymes, and has become a staple event in Toronto’s hip hop community. For the past three years, The Cypher has continually grown and evolved both in scope and size, providing a plethora of opportunities both for creators of hip hop music and fans of hip hop music and culture alike. From monthly events where anyone in attendance is free to join the cypher and pass the mic around, to cyphers and jams in parks and street festivals around the city, to organizing and promoting large concerts showcasing the likes of J-Live (Triple Threat Productions), Jeru the Damaja (Gang Starr Foundation), and Stalley (MMG), The Cypher continually stands for the manifestation and proliferation of hip hop as an idea, a cultural movement, and an art-form. The addition of lyricist and freestyle competitions as well as artist features at regular events has given artists opportunities to be recognized and stand out among their peers. The Cypher is also continually expanding its reach beyond Toronto, with past events in Chicago, Hamilton, and Guelph. __________________________ Music will be provided by DJ Xplisit as well as a live performance by The Cypher Crew. All artists in attendance will have the opportunity to get on the mic and perform in the cyphers, in which emcees pass the microphone around and take turns rapping. Lyricist and/or freestyle competition will also occur. The Cypher is taking place on the top floor of The Central, doors at 9pm. Free admission before 10pm, $5 cover after 10pm. |

THE CYPHER feat. Winners Circle and iLL-Literate
FB EVENT PAGE: http://www.facebook.com/events/365929110097313/
WHERE: Augusta House, 152 Augusta Ave. (Kensington Market, - Toronto, ON)
After a successful show opening for GZA and Masta Killa of the Wu-Tang, we're back in full effect for this month's installment of THE CYPHER, featuring:
Winners Circle (Bad Newz, L the Twelfth Letter, and Ekko Effect):
“You...you are DOPE!"
He started out as one-third of the group 'The Hard Way', which also included current Winner's Circle teammate Ekko Effect, before choosing to make his way as a solo artist. He once ranked as high as number four among Toronto hip-hop artists on popular music website ReverbNation; he’s been a winner at Toronto’s The Cypher Lyricist Competition and has shared stages with established acts like D-Sisive and Fresh Kils as well as his Winner's Circle crew Ekko Effect, L and DJ Smartiez.
L the Twelfth Letter
Toronto emcee L isn’t a new face to the hip-hop game, but has continuously paved the way to success through solo and group projects. After releasing a compilation mixtape, “The Last 12 Months,” in April, L exemplified the raw skills he posseses, but also acknowledged the improvements that could be made.
L’s primary focus as of late has been his new mixtape based off of two simple words: just rap. In an industry where the core roots of hip-hop music have taken a backseat to flashier feels, Just Rap allows L to step outside of the ‘rapper box,’ and truly embrace the role of emcee. With his witty punchlines, vivacious lyricism, and salient flow, L’s dynamic sound encompasses elements from the Golden Era with new school vibes.
He’s wowed crowds at Manifesto and artist showcases Droppin’ Knowledge, F.Y.I. and Freshly Squeezed and shared stages with established hip-hop names like Jean Grae, D-Sisive, Son Real and Rich Kidd. Having already received radio spins on Stylistik Endeavours (CIUT) and Backroads Radio (CHRY); and club spins by two-time Stylus Mixshow DJ of the Year DJ P-Plus and 2011 Stylus Rated Next Nominee DJ Smartiez, L is ready to conquer Canadian radiowaves and clubs with an entire mixtape of fresh music,
starting with first single “Just Rap.” From the beginning of his career as a member of a group, to the transition that developed him into a solo artist, L is certainly in a position to take on anything thrown his way and thrive to the top.
Ekko Effect
Toronto emcee Ekko Effect is not your typical post-new school rapper chasing big bucks, European cars and R&B chicks. He’s here hoping to use hip-hop to give a voice to those that wouldn’t have one otherwise, and shine a light on the struggles that young people of colour face in today's society. After starting out four years ago as part of the group Hardway, which also included current Winners Circle crewmate Bad Newz, he decided to branch out as a solo artist and has been perfecting his passionate, intelligent flow ever since.
He is slowly and surely making a name for himself in the hip-hop arena; most recently contributing fiery 16’s to crewmate L’s “Past Due (Remix)” and the Black History Month anthem “Time Is Now” featuring Phoenix Pagliacci, L, Proverbs and Brian Notice. He’s moved the crowd in several recent live performances, sharing stages with prominent Canadian artists like D-Sisive and Fresh Kils and fellow Winners Circle members L, Bad Newz and DJ Smartiez. Ekko is now working on his first mixtape, titled Knowledge Speaks, Wisdom Listens, furthering his goal to better the lives of others through music.
And
iLL-Literate:
iLL-Literate is an emcee from the suburbs of Toronto who is determined to add his own flavor to hip hop. His flow and refined lyrics are demonstrated on his first demo CD, Origin-iLL Vol.1. Keep an eye out for this new comer - whether he's spitting freestyles at The Cypher or performing a show, iLL-Literate always manages to move a crowd.

THE CYPHER feat. royceBIRTH and FenaxiZ - Jan. 18, 2012
WHEN: Weds. Jan 18, 2012, doors at 9:30pm
WHERE: Augusta House (152 Augusta Ave., Toronto)
To set off the year, we're proud to be featuring two talented artists who have been grinding on the scene for several years:
royceBIRTH and FenaxiZ
Blending dirty soul-driven production with razor-sharp lyrics, royceBIRTH and FenaxiZ comprise the rap duo Chain City. For eight years, these two have been contributing their own distinct brand of beats, rhymes, and life to Toronto's underground Hip-Hop scene, but as individual artists with their own respective solo careers.
royceBIRTH would make a name for himself providing hard-hitting gritty soundscapes for several of the city's top-notch rhymers while FenaxiZ became known amongst rap connoisseurs for authoring introspective, intricate, and poetic verses. Friends since their high school years, Royce Birth and FenaxiZ would often collaborate on eachother's projects so it was only natural that they would eventually get together for a Chain City EP.
When asked about the group name, FenaxiZ explains, "It's often said that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, so we keep that saying in mind when we work. It pushes each of us to come as hard as we possibly can and give it our best." Royce adds, "We also realized that everyone in the industry is connected to eachother. If you've heard about the 6-degrees of separation rule, that number becomes even smaller when applied to the Canadian Hip-Hop industry so we want everyone involved in this scene to recognize that fact and work together towards putting our art out there as a whole."
The Chain City EP is set to drop this year and will feature the single "Ah Yeah" as well as "Substance (feat. MC FÜBB)" and "Born & Raised." And if this project isn't enough to satisfy the heads out there, 2012 will also see the release of Royce Birth's "Cassette" and FenaxiZ' "Vintage" solo albums.

THE CYPHER - Holiday Edition
FB EVENT PAGE: http://www.facebook.com/events/289920467719502/
This month is the HOLIDAY EDITION of THE CYPHER! We're featuring the live production + emceeing duo of Juno Nominated producer Fresh Kils and veteran MC Relic, as well as Scarborough-native freestyle master Sy Fi.
In the spirit of giving, we're also supporting the Daily Bread Food Bank, so please bring a canned/non-perishable food donation to help some hungry people in our city (and get reduced cover on door!).
Fresh Kils (http://get.extremitiesmusic.com/)
From behind the boards to the stage, there’s not a spot of ground Fresh Kils’ prolific career hasn’t touched. And not just hip hop. It’s true, you’ll see Saigon, Fabolous and Ali Shaheed (ATCQ) grace his resume, but you’ll also find the likes of Ron Sexsmith & The Buena Vista Social Club. His prowess on the MPC has seen him share the stage with many of hip hop’s legends (Nas, De La Soul) as well as the best of the underground, winning over fans with his signature showmanship. With momentum & accolades growing each year, Fresh Kils’ is poised for a sound system takeover unlike any we’ve seen in a long time. You’ve been warned…
+
Relic (http://relic.bandcamp.com/)
RELIC aka REL McCoy - Emcee, Producer, D.J., Singer/songwriter, Engineer... Lover of all that is Hip Hop..
" Fighting with the shadows been a hassle for me letting my past go / I ain't looking back to the sad road / I'm burning my hands on the rope, holding my future with a lasso / plus, it's been a struggle trying to kick this tobacco " - REL
and
Sy-Fi
S, For Science. Y, try to challenge this. F, for futuristic. I, for intelligence.
Sy-fi, born as a Toronto native, started rapping when he was 12. Grew up listening to hip-hop in its golden age era to groups like Wu-Tang and The Roots, Mobb Deep, Slum Village De La Soul and emcees like Redman, Busta Rhymes, and Nas and more. Sy grew up more as a freestyle emcee that just rapped everywhere, anywhere he went.
Sy moved to Boston at the age of 18 and met Session a emcee producer of Acuta Records. Sy and Session rolled together for a few years but remained solo artists, performing at open mics around the city. Sy joined Acuta and performed with them on a couple shows but never
signed to the label and moved back to Toronto.
After moving back to Toronto he met 2 other solo artists Eso Teriq and Symmetry and formed a group "The Scientists." They put together a few songs and performed at few open mics and shows but couldn't manage to stay together due to life differences. Not much of a song writer, for Sy was an emcee that rhymes more "in the moment" if a Cypher was around you sure likely would find Sy in it. Sy-fi's style is like super hero, comic book, emcee or as De La Soul put it "supa emcee" andtries to be as creatively different as possible.
You're now intuned, into the Sy-fi channel. The mic is the 9 and the rhyme is the ammo. Step up to get blown like candles, strap up get ready to blaze like saddles.
You can look forward to Sy-fi solo career starting to move ahead and hopefully ready to drop an EP sometime in 2012 "Science Park"

The Cypher is making it's way out to Guelph...
Featured performers: Babylon Warchild - http:// Babylon Warchild is a 3-member, organic, live-hiphop band from downtown Toronto. The group is comprised of three unique artists, from diverse backgrounds, brought together through their shared respect and love for hiphop music. Each member brings something different to the table. UNKNOWN MIZERY, emcee, is well known in the Toronto hiphop scene for speaking out about social change and against the oppression of all people. LEGITIMATE, emcee, is a diversely talented emcee/producer known for bone-crushing machine-gun mic presence and a conscious, thought provoking lyricism reminiscent of the 90's golden era. RUMPLESTILTZ, hiphop cello player/producer, brings a brand new sound to any hiphop show, by playing a live string instrument on stage. Using looping pedals, effects, and the help of a DJ, Rumplestiltz can create complex hiphop beats on the fly. Babylon Warchild's debut album, self titled, is available on iTunes and Robbie G - http://www.youtube.com/ + Molly Gruesome - http://www.youtube.com/ + Static __________________________ THE CYPHER LYRICIST COMPETITION: MCs spit their best 16's, competing to win cash. THE CYPHER feat. Sep and J Shiltz
WHEN: Weds. Nov. 16, 2011 - Doors @ 9:30pm
WHERE: Augusta House - 152 Augusta Avenue (Kensington Market)
This month at THE CYPHER, we're featuring two up-and-coming artists:
Sep - http://www.whoissep.com/
Raw talent. Word smith. Lyrical mastermind. Quick creativity. Instant composition. Urban griot. To say that Sep is a phenomenal MC would be to overlook the numerous unique qualities that make this hip-hop artist a true original.
An aggressive lyrical style, gifted thought processes, and intelligent ideologies have shaped the tone and impact of Sep's music. He is a rapper's rapper. One that is hard…without being rigid. One that is clever…without being cocky, and one that is talented…effortlessly. Simply watching Sep perform and listening to his creations will easily bring industry experts and music consumers alike to the same conclusion: Sep represents the direction that true music lovers want to see hip hop go in, and he is destined to continue to rise to the top of his craft.
Sep's [first??] studio album, Allergy Pills and Alcohol (aka Who Is Sep), was released on May 29, 2011 and features guest vocals from Sadat X, Rich Kidd, Grimace Love, Slakah the Beatchild, Black Cat and Korry Deez (of IRS), Wio-K, among others.

J Shiltz - www.youtube.com/jshiltzmus ic

The Sauga City MC has dropped hit after hit since his Kev Brown produced debut single "Louder" featuring Notlam and Grimace Love was released in May of 2010, and now he is finally ready to release his first official album. WHAT I STAND FOR drops on November 17th at the Sound Battle Royal. The album features production from Kev Brown, Rich Kidd, Lancecape, Smash Brovaz, and Philly's own Twizzmatic while boasting features from Frank Nitty, Illa J, and Sonreal as well as some of Toronto's dopest MC's.
