THE CYPHER - 3 Year Anniversary

3 Years Strong...

From its humble beginnings in the summer of 2009 on the Queen Street sidewalk in front of KOPS Records, The Cypher has come a very long way. Starting out with the simple idea of giving hip hop emcees an outlet to get some mic time, The Cypher is now looked to by many artists as the place to sharpen and hone their talents and skills, network, have fun, express themselves, practice their rhymes, and has become a staple event in Toronto’s hip hop community.

For the past three years, The Cypher has continually grown and evolved both in scope and size, providing a plethora of opportunities both for creators of hip hop music and fans of hip hop music and culture alike. From monthly events where anyone in attendance is free to join the cypher and pass the mic around, to cyphers and jams in parks and street festivals around the city, to organizing and promoting large concerts showcasing the likes of J-Live (Triple Threat Productions), Jeru the Damaja (Gang Starr Foundation), and Stalley (MMG), The Cypher continually stands for the manifestation and proliferation of hip hop as an idea, a cultural movement, and an art-form. The addition of lyricist and freestyle competitions as well as artist features at regular events has given artists opportunities to be recognized and stand out among their peers. The Cypher is also continually expanding its reach beyond Toronto, with past events in Chicago, Hamilton, and Guelph.

_____________________________________________________

Music will be provided by DJ Xplisit as well as a live performance by The Cypher Crew.

All artists in attendance will have the opportunity to get on the mic and perform in the cyphers, in which emcees pass the microphone around and take turns rapping. Lyricist and/or freestyle competition will also occur.

The Cypher is taking place on the top floor of The Central, doors at 9pm.

Free admission before 10pm, $5 cover after 10pm.

THE CYPHER: NAS vs. JAY-Z Edition

WHEN: Weds. May 23, 2012

WHERE: Augusta House (152 Augusta Ave., Toronto)

Are you a Hip Hop Head?

If you answered YES, you've probably engaged and taken sides in this debate on more than one occasion: Who's the iller emcee, NAS or JAY-Z?!

In one of the most prolific and lyrically intense beefs in hip hop history, the two legendary New York emcees went at it on the radio, in guest spots, on record, overtly and subliminally. Jigga's mom even had to get involved.

In 2005 they re-united (ironically at Jay's "I DECLARE WAR" concert) and have since appeared on the same track a number of times.

But on Wednesday, May 23rd, we're bringin' it BACK to 2001, The Cypher style!

DJ Xplisit will be playing classic songs from such classic albums as Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, Stillmatic, God's Son, The Black Album, In My Lifetime, It Was Written, and Nastradamus. Okay, maybe not that last one.

To add to the pot, we're having our LYRICIST COMPETITION, where emcees bring their best 16's over Jay & Nas instrumentals. $10 to enter, winner takes all.

As for The Cypher segment, ALL EMCEES GET MIC TIME! So come through and rock at Toronto's only organic hip hop open mic!

ALSO, don't forget to grab your tickets for the upcoming Stalley show, featuring a performance by The Cypher!

and

J-White
"If ya'll dont know J-WHITE ...Y'all need to know J-WHITE. He has been rippin thru THE CYPHER since 2011, with the Biggie Tribute, Lyricist Competition under his belt, ya'll better expect a worthy opponent for this months competiton. After come out of one of the dopest groups, FACTION, he plans to show you what he's got planned solo for 2012. Witty gullly, grimey rhymes, with his first mixtape Thearpy of a Lyricist, and then his new Mixtape That Matters dropping in march, J-WHITE is definitely showing the persistence and work ethic you need to have to make it in the rap game.
