The Cypher - Post-Manifesto Rap-Up Edition

Just a day before the beginning of the Manifesto Festival here in Toronto, what better way to kick things off than with a classic installment of The Cypher?

For featured acts for the evening, we're putting on two veteran emcees (and long-time Cypher supporters), in addition to a young emcee who's been showing and proving much over the past year:

NewBreedMC

It's not very often that a rapper can come along and blend raw underground rap skills with commercial appeal that transcends cultural and social barriers, but NewBreedMC is definitely one of those MCs. Cut in the mold of a Mos Def or Black Thought and holding true to the core essence of Hip Hop that started out in the Bronx, NewBreedMC can spit a rhyme to have the back packers bopping their heads and at the same time he is well enough in tuned to social issues and political agendas that his words could start a small revolution.

Bad Newz

28-year-old emcee Bad Newz has come a long way since writing his first rhyme as a fourth-grader. The Torontonian’s easy flow and cocky lyrical style has earned him the respect of his peers and fans alike, once impressing 'The Teacher' himself, KRS-ONE, with a verse at a 2009 Ryerson University speaking engagement in Toronto. "My man, that was DOPE,” KRS told Newz in front of the packed house. “You... you are DOPE!" That small victory fueled Newz’ fire and he has worked hard to build towards a career as a successful recording artist. He’s currently piecing together his first solo mixtape “Dirty English,” which will surely put him squarely on the hip-hop map.

Drig

Drig is an emcee out of Markham, ON. Immersing himself in the local Toronto hip hop scene since 2011, he hopes to positively represent Canadian hip-hop and continually strives to define his signature sound through a wide variety of projects. He is currently working on an upcoming electronic and downtempo inspired mixtape, entitled “Flintstones Chewable Morphine,” since releasing "The Duffel Bag Pre-Tape" in September 2011.

THE CYPHER Presents...the "TO for Toronto Cypher" feat. SepTo and Brotha J

On the heels of his 3rd and latest mixtape, "T.O. For Toronto,"
SepTo joins forces with The Cypher to showcase some new music.

Mixed by turntablist, multiple award winner, and Toronto legend, DJ Grouch; T.O. For Toronto bridges the generation gap in Toronto’s (Canada’s) hip hop music landscape while paying homage to its history. SepTo updates some classic songs by the likes of Michee Mee, Kardinal Offishall, The Rascalz, Choclair, and more including the Ghetto Concept inspired lead single, EZ When Approachin’. The tape also features new music and verses from Dan-e-o, Wio K, Grimace Love, Shi Wisdom, Kardinal, and Septo’s own NevR crew, including Juno Award winner, Brotha J. Speaking about coming together with The Cypher, SepTo says “I’m very patriotic, so joining forces with The Cypher for some exclusiveperformances from my CD, was a no brainer. They respect the art and the architect and supported me at the genesis of my career ... I can’t wait to perform this music live!”

THE CYPHER - 3 Year Anniversary

3 Years Strong...

From its humble beginnings in the summer of 2009 on the Queen Street sidewalk in front of KOPS Records, The Cypher has come a very long way. Starting out with the simple idea of giving hip hop emcees an outlet to get some mic time, The Cypher is now looked to by many artists as the place to sharpen and hone their talents and skills, network, have fun, express themselves, practice their rhymes, and has become a staple event in Toronto’s hip hop community.

For the past three years, The Cypher has continually grown and evolved both in scope and size, providing a plethora of opportunities both for creators of hip hop music and fans of hip hop music and culture alike. From monthly events where anyone in attendance is free to join the cypher and pass the mic around, to cyphers and jams in parks and street festivals around the city, to organizing and promoting large concerts showcasing the likes of J-Live (Triple Threat Productions), Jeru the Damaja (Gang Starr Foundation), and Stalley (MMG), The Cypher continually stands for the manifestation and proliferation of hip hop as an idea, a cultural movement, and an art-form. The addition of lyricist and freestyle competitions as well as artist features at regular events has given artists opportunities to be recognized and stand out among their peers. The Cypher is also continually expanding its reach beyond Toronto, with past events in Chicago, Hamilton, and Guelph.
